+ The Roebucks: There’s something disorienting about a Roebucks show.

The four people on stage are in their twenties. They are young, but the sound they make is not. Their music is elemental – the low, churning weight of Henry Brown’s bass, Tom Cotter’s wild and untamed guitar, Sophie Moloney’s primal back beat – they’re following a tradition that is earnt not learnt. And up front, Lola Gordon, her raw, aching voice making the room feel bigger and darker than it was a moment before.

This is explosive, full-throttle blues-rooted rock music played with the kind of instinctive authority that it usually takes musicians decades to develop. The Roebucks appear to have been born with it.

What makes them more than just an exceptional live band is the songwriting. Beneath the squall and the groove, there are achingly memorable pop songs – structured, melodic, and lyrically wise in ways that sit oddly and compellingly against the youth of the people playing them while still being rooted in the modern world around them. All four compose with an emotional precision that doesn’t announce itself. The observations land quietly, then stay.

+ Maximilian: Simple melodies to ease a worried mind. Adrianne Lenker’s sweet lightness meets Elliott Smith’s dark intensities. Alex G’s child-like sensibility meets Neil Young’s inner presence. The result is carefully crafted songs with immaculate arrangements and earnest lyricism, like the product of some benevolent, arcane ritual. Vocalising compassion, expressing the will to comfort, through love letters from afar.
