Darren Hayman is a thoughtful, concise and detailed songwriter. He eschews the big, the bright and the loud for the small, twisted and lost. For 15 years, and over 14 albums, Hayman has taken a singular and erratic route through England’s tired and heartbroken underbelly.

Hayman was influenced by punk through his art college years, but throughout the ’90s he was inspired by American lo-fi indie-rock.  A chance meeting with John Peel favourites New Bad Things and shows with them in London and Portland USA taught Darren the DIY ethic and soon he was self-releasing records by his first band, Hefner.

+ Terse Affection: The tagging of this split single on Bandcamp as ‘country goth’ initially comes across like a healthy disdain for generic categorisation. But it turns out to be a pretty close description of this solo project from Sealings’ Michael Cotter. Here his music echoes the wonky darkness of artists like The Cramps and Women/Cindy Lee, and imagines them jamming in the shadows under a disco ball in front of an audience of extras from David Lynch movies

We operate the Buddy Scheme at our gigs. The Club is accessible for wheelchairs with management. It’s all on one level apart from a small threshold at the front door for which we have a portable ramp. The toilets are not Building Regulations Part M compliant, but one of the WC’s is reasonably accessible. Visiting outside gig times should present no problems, but please email music@lewesconclub.com ahead on gig nights so we can meet and greet and reserve a space with a view of the stage. If you require a carer at the venue, please contact us at info@lovethyneighbourmusic.co.uk for guestlist, with evidence such as a blue badge or access card.
