Working across song, sound, writing and analogue filmmaking, Irish artist Hilary Woods’ atmospheric and evocative compositions cultivate practices that are in call and response to each other. Her sensorial sonic experimentalism and her excavations incorporating drone, samples, field recordings, texture and voice, give way to the intimacy and tenderness of a deeply personal and intuitive song-writing. A sound embedded in visual potency, physicality and a moving majesty, 2023 will see the release of Hilary’s third full length record on Sacred Bones Records. Live she will be joined on her upcoming shows by pioneering and visionary drummer and percussionist Gabriel Ferrandini, whose impulse to free the drums from their conventional confines creates states of confluence between
rhythm, texture and harmony.

Early independent music releases were hailed as ‘a revelation in terms of the depth of song writing’ (The Sunday Times), and were followed by her critically acclaimed debut LP Colt on Sacred Bones Records in 2018. Encompassing “the stuff of Bosch paintings’, Colt comprises eight ‘stark and haunting compositions that stand on the edge of a knife” (Bandcamp). Her sophomore LP Birthmarks (‘a thrilling and scopic round trip” – The Quietus), was released in 2020, before Isolation Tank emerged on tape as part of the Documenting Sound series on Boomkat Editions. The reverberating songs and charcoal skies of Woods’ simmering EP Feral Hymns were released on cassette in 2021.

Hilary Woods has toured extensively throughout Europe and the US playing special guest to Grouper, Low and Marissa Nadler, with solo headline performances at Le Guess Who, Southbank, Sonic City, Zemlika and Quarter Block Party, to name but a few. http://www.hilarywoods.com

Ian Helliwell: A self-taught multi-media artist, Ian Helliwell works in music, film, animation, analogue electronics, instrument building, collage, installations, live performance, light show projection, graphic design, writing and film programming. He has made over 170 experimental films – one of the largest bodies of shorts in the world to feature electronic music soundtracks by one artist. With his ‘creative soldering’ approach, he has designed and built a unique range of electronic tone generating machines – Hellitrons and Hellisizers – which he uses to compose and record his music. His book, Tape Leaders – A Compendium of Early British Electronic Music Composers, was first published in 2016, and since 2008 he has been making the Tone Generation, an audio series in which he researches and discusses early electronic music recordings.
He runs his Analogue Sound Workshop from his flat in the centre of Brighton, giving participants an opportunity to experience older style equipment and experiment without computers, making electronic sounds using tape and battery powered circuitry. For the upcoming Cinecity film festival in Brighton he is launching Synch Pulse, a monthly night in the Lord Nelson pub screening experimental animation and avant garde short films. http://www.ianhelliwell.co.uk/
