Shovel Dance Collective Lewes
Shovel Dance Collective live in Lewes at the Con Club on Sunday 24th November! This will be an unreserved seated show. Tickets have sold out, if you missed out join the waiting list on Dice or Seetickets.
Shovel Dance Collective are a group of nine musicians united by a passion for the beauty, force, and political charge of the traditional musics of Britain, Ireland and beyond. They are committed to Folk music not as an archaeological artifact to be unearthed, but as a living communal activity – inviting and generous to those it speaks to. They arrange the source material into a kind of musique boue (mud music), simultaneously traditional and experimental they engage a deep, cross-temporal synthesis of free improvisation, tape manipulation and field recordings. Their music appears as a patchwork as pieces are stitched together, rearranged and recontextualised. The yarn is threaded with both their sense of aesthetic innovation, and with a deep sense of the ways in which traditional music holds the voices of the oppressed, the everyday and those who, by their labour, create the wealth of the world.
They have performed sold out shows across the UK, with headline concerts at venues such as Cecil Sharp House, Kings Place and Cafe OTO. The collective have appeared at many major festivals: Glastonbury, Roskilde, SXSW, Green Man, End of the Road, Sidmouth Folk Festival, Supernormal and Supersonic festivals among others. Publications such as The Wire, Loud and Quiet, NME, Financial Times and The Times have heralded their live performances across the years. Their first record ‘The Water is the Shovel of the Shore’ has been championed by The Wire, Folk Radio, Tradfolk and was named one of the albums of the year by The Quietus.
Their second album ‘The Shovel Dance’ will be released in October 2024 by American Dreams Records. https://www.shovel.dance
+ Hoverdonkey: After a number of years playing in bands more aligned with psyche and noise rock, a chance conversation revealed a shared love of accoustic folk guitar picking and Hoverdonkey was born. Taking inspiration from both older 70’s folk revival masters such as Jon Renbourne and amazing contemporary players they spent 2023 writing and playing anywhere that would let them. They released their first single on Gardener’s Delight Records in June 2024 which quickly sold out. They are currently working on an album due for release in early 2025. Hoverdonkey aim is to send listeners into a reflective state of relaxation with their music. As Gardener’s delight records put it, ‘Hoverdonkey conjure the vibe of meanderingly complex walks that always seem to end up with a superbly poured pint in a more than decent country pub’
About the single HOVERDONKEY – “Stratus Crow” b/w “Superspreader” are two wonderfully meandering tracks of acoustic guitar, with a flowingly dissonant violin accompianment, packaged in the most exquisite, hand numbered screen printed sleeve with art insert.

Accessibility:
We operate the Buddy Scheme at our gigs. The Club is accessible for wheelchairs with management. It’s all on one level apart from a small threshold at the front door for which we have a portable ramp. The toilets are not Building Regulations Part M compliant, but one of the WC’s is reasonably accessible. Visiting outside gig times should present no problems, but please email music@lewesconclub.com ahead on gig nights so we can meet and greet and reserve a space with a view of the stage. If you require a carer at the venue, please contact us at info@lovethyneighbourmusic.co.uk for guestlist, with evidence such as a blue badge or access card.
