Prolapse Lewes

Prolapse play the Lewes Constitutional Club on Friday 27th September! Get tickets with only a £1 booking fee above, or from Seetickets.

Prolapse originally formed in Leicester, UK, in the early 1990s and earned a cult following for their chaotic live sets, and tense and repetitious songs like Flex and Tina This Is Matthew Stone. They feature duelling vocalists Mick Derrick and Linda Steelyard, who play out an intense soap opera over a ferocious triple guitar assault and pummelling rhythm section.

Their releases have included numerous singles and four albums on various labels, including Cherry Red and Radar, as well as recording four sessions for BBC Radio 1 including 2 Peel sessions. The band has received critical acclaim, including singles of the week on the BBC Radio 1 evening session and in NME. They have also toured and shared bills with a diverse array of bands, including Stereolab, Sebadoh, Mogwai, Arab Strap and Sonic Youth. Prolapse have been writing new material and finishing off recording their fifth album.

The band released four albums between ’94 and ’99 (Pointless Walks To Dismal Places; backsaturday; The Italian Flag; The Ghost of Dead Aeroplanes), and each still manages to sound not only fresh and relevant, but also urgent, and very, very necessary. It has been said, however, that no Prolapse experience can be deemed complete without having seen them live, when every gig felt as if it had been scripted by a quorum involving Samuel Beckett, Hunter S Thompson, Marjorie Proops and Mark E Smith”. https://prolapse2.bandcamp.com

+ CHOPCHOP: CHOPCHOP’s music veers from super-bumping agit-funk to angular jazz-punk and beyond. Led by the gesticulations of Galician performance artist Xelís de Toro, the band churn up a tense and exciting brew of sounds live, and have been described as “a fantastic life affirming noise” by Tom Robinson on 6 Music.

“CHOPCHOP’s music snakes round its orator like a slippery thing, cymbals replaced by the clatter of hubcaps on toms, cutlery-jammed guitars – there’s an itchy jazzy vibe to the melodics, fuelled by a fertile imagination full of bruised shapes and punkish angles. Performance artist Xelís de Toro dances the jagged edges superbly in an urgent, jerky Giacometti centrepiece that has a David Byrne-like drive to his contortions, enraptured in a stream of consciousness simplicity and a razor-sharp intellect. The sounds that surround him are tensive, built up on darting dynamics, eerie keys and smeared trumpet that Schaumburg your head with surprise. A mosaic whole, crawling and crackling, mining mantra-like to vocal abstracts that punch out their confines.” – Michael Rodham-Heaps, FREQ magazine

Accessibility:

We operate the Buddy Scheme at our gigs. The Club is accessible for wheelchairs with management. It’s all on one level apart from a small threshold at the front door for which we have a portable ramp. The toilets are not Building Regulations Part M compliant, but one of the WC’s is reasonably accessible. Visiting outside gig times should present no problems, but please email music@lewesconclub.com ahead on gig nights so we can meet and greet and reserve a space with a view of the stage. If you require a carer at the venue, please contact us at info@lovethyneighbourmusic.co.uk for guestlist, with evidence such as a blue badge or access card.
